The would-be victim was home when the bandits tried to break in just before 11 a.m., Police Chief Timothy McWilliams told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

She called her husband, who alerted police.

Several marked and unmarked units responded, with one of the unmarkeds stopping the suspects’ red, two-door Chevy on Jaclyn Avenue.

“That’s the benefit of calling police immediately,” Police Capt. Jason Cosgriff told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon. “We always urge people not to hesitate. Let us sort out whether it’s valid or not.”

Detectives obtained a warrant, searched the car last night and found burglary tools and brass knuckle knife.

Velon Haynes and William Roman were being held on $50,000 bail each, charged with burglary, defiant trespassing and possession of a weapon, drugs, drug paraphernalia and burglary tools.

McWilliams thanked the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and Ho-Ho-Kus police for their assistance.
