Firefighters had to rip the front door off the East Lanza Court residence to gain entry, witnesses said. What appeared to be the smell of ammonia prompted a call for a hazardous materials unit, they added. A "large number" of pets, several of them dead and some barely alive, were found, along with numerous cages, trash, litter and debris, responders said. Hoarding Conditions Complicated Catasauqua House Fire That Killed Homeowner, Officials Say Extreme hoarding conditions complicated fighting a Lehigh County house fire that left one victim dead Saturday, fire officials said. The blaze broke out around 5:35 a.m. at 119 Union St., in Catasauqua, bringing more than 100 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters, however, were unable to get more than a few feet inside of the multi-level home due to "floor to ceiling hoarding conditions," LehighValleyLive says citing Fire Chief Rich Hertzog. Fire Ravages Clutter-Filled Bergen Home Flames roared through the upper-floor windows of a Teaneck home that responders said was filled with clutter. No injuries were reported in the two-alarm Beverly Road blaze, which broke out around 10:30 p.m. Friday amid what responders said were hoarding conditions. Hackensack and Englewood firefighters joined their Teaneck colleagues at the scene, while those from Bergenfield, Bogota and Ridgefield Park covered the township. No immediate official cause had been disclosed.
