Kristen Heitmann, described as a “devoted wife and mother,” suffered severe head injuries after a “tragic fall,” according to a GoFundMe launched by loved ones on Saturday, March 18.

Heitmann is also a part-time physical therapist for children with disabilities, a career in which she is incredibly passionate about, the fundraiser says.

Since the accident, Heitmann has undergone several surgeries and therapies — but the road to recovery isn’t an easy one.

“She is improving but Kristen has a long road to recovery ahead of her and she will need all the support she can get,” reads the campaign. “The costs of medical bills, rehabilitation and ongoing care are immense and every donation, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping to cover these expenses and ensure Kristen receives the best possible care.”

Heitmann’s husband, Jon, will also have to take family leave from work in order to care for her as she recovers, the campaign explains.

Over $54,600 had been raised for the family by around 550 donors as of Thursday, May 18, nearly 2.5x the campaign's original goal of $20,000.

In addition to financial support, community support remains endless as well:

“As a community, we can come together to support Kristen and her family during this difficult time," the campaign says. "A mantra that has been helping Kristen and her family stay positive is ‘A little better every day.’ With your support, we can help Kristen and her family forward, one day at a time.”

The mantra is being perpetuated by supporters — and Heitmann herself — on social media as well:
