Kareem Pygum shot Jose Alfredo Azcona Garcia on the 500 block of N. Clinton Avenue jus after 8 p.m. on April 4, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said.

Pygum also struck a woman in the shoulder and a man suffered a graze to his cheek. The woman and Azcona Garcia were both taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where Azcona Garcia died on April 9.

A GoFundMe was launched by Azcona Garcia's children, having raised more than $12,600 as of press time.

Richard and Niurka say their father was struck in his spine and was left paralyzed in the days before he died.

"This loss has left a huge void in our hearts, and we find ourselves struggling to understand and accept this painful reality," they write on the campaign. "At this time of deep grief, we humbly ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers."

Pygum was arrested on Hudson Street in Trenton on April 10, and was found in possession of a small quantity of crack cocaine and a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver, Onofri said. A motive for the killing has not immediately been announced.

He's been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree aggravated assault and three weapons offenses, including certain persons not to possess a weapon. The prosecutor’s office has filed a motion to detain Pygum pending trial.
