Discarded Water Gauge Draws Bomb Squad To Ramapo River In Mahwah

MAHWAH, N.J. -- A discarded water temperature gauge raised concerns after it was found Saturday morning on the shore of the Ramapo River at the Polo Club in Mahwah.

"It was a piece of pipe capped on both ends, with a wire sticking out of the end of it," Police Chief James Batelli told Daily Voice. "It's used to gauge the temperature of the water for fishermen.

"Someone apparently pulled it out of the water and left it there."

The Bergen County Sheriff's Bomb Squad wasn't able to determine what it was until it detonated the device, another first responder told Daily Voice.
