The video (above) shows the driver slamming the back of the red 1996 Jeep Cherokee into the front of the Delta Gas Station on Riverside Avenue -- causing severe damage both to the station and the vehicle -- around 3:30 a.m. Friday, Capt. John Valente said.
Officers Steve Batista and Mark Rivera found the Jeep with rear-end damage several blocks away, Valente said. It had been reported stolen out of Newark, he said.
A search of the area for suspects didn't turn up anything, he said.
"It appeared as though the intention was to attach a rope, seen hanging from the rear of the vehicle, to an ATM machine located in the interior of the building in an attempt to remove it," Valente said.
But the bandits never got in, he said.
The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification swept the station for evidence and impounded the Jeep for processing.
