Severe thunderstorms were expected to hit Bergen and Passaic counties late Tuesday afternoon or early evening through 9 p.m., the National Weather Service said.
The severe thunderstorm was to remain in effect through 9 p.m.
"The main severe threat is for damaging winds and possibly hail," the weather service said.
The storm, which developed across northeastern Pennsylvania and headed southeast, was expected to collide with a cold front moving south from upstate New York.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high in the lower 60s, the weather service said.
