Little Ferry Ex-Con Charged With Pistol-Whipping, Robbing Teen Of $10G Cash, $18G Gold Chain
A Little Ferry ex-con was charged with pistol-whipping an Elmwood Park teenager and robbing him of what the victim said was a huge amount of cash and jewelry. The 19-year-old victim had gone to the Washington Avenue home of Anton Pettway, 44, to collect belongings that he'd left behind when his teenage friend -- Pettway's stepson -- was arrested earlier in the day, Police Chief James Walters said. The teen told responding Officers Dominick Verdi, Joseph Montemurro and Dean Steinhilber that Pettway hit him at least a half-dozen times with a gun, took his wallet -- which he claimed held $10,0…

NJ Town's Historians Desperate To Save Cherished Funeral Home Featured In 'The Sopranos'
A historic funeral home dubbed Belleville's "town jewel" is facing demolition. Built in 1887, the Cozzarelli Memorial Home is one of the town's last surviving historical structures, and was featured in "The Sopranos," as Tony mourned his mom's loss. The Washington Avenue building could be designated an "Area in Need of Redevelopment," as a resolution approved during a council meeting last month will allow the Planning Board determine that, NJ Advance Media reports. Michael Perrone, the president of Belleville's historical society, says the town is looking to demolish the building to m…

Ex-Con With Violent History Jailed After Fighting Little Ferry Police At HQ
A violent ex-con from Carlstadt who spent several years in state prison for robbing a group of tourists at knifepoint assaulted Little Ferry police at their headquarters over the weekend, authorities said. What he may or may not have known was that the victim had just shown police text messages that he’d sent that same day, the chief said. When Officers Joseph Montemurro and Officer Max Katzner told Recanati they'd hav…

River Vale Man Charged With Clubbing Ex-Roomie With Baton In Hillsdale Liquor Store Brawl
A River Vale man surrendered to Hillsdale police on Friday after clobbering a former roommate with an expandable baton during a fight at a local liquor store, authorities said. Bartello Merlino, 45, and the victim already had a contentious history when they ran into each other at the Bottle King on Washington Avenue early Thursday night, Police Capt. Sean Smith said. They exchanged words and began fighting when Merlino pulled out the baton and whacked the 26-year-old borough man over the head with it, Smith said. He then fled in a Jeep Liberty, the captain said. The victim was taken to Ha…
