Workers Gassed By Their Own Employer During Protest In Bergen County, Lawsuit Says
Five New Jersey employees say they were gassed by their own employer while picketing at an industrial facility, twice in two states, according to a lawsuit filed in Bergen County Superior Court this week.
The plaintiffs, all employees of Airgas USA, LLC and members of Local 701 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), allege in court papers filed Wednesday, Aug. 6, that they were “engaged in lawful and peaceful picketing activity” outside Airgas locations in Oakland, NJ and Peoria, IL in July when they were engulfed by an unknown chemical plume.

A Paterson man is facing strict liability charges after investigators say he supplied the fatal dose of fentanyl that killed a 42-year-old man in an Elmwood Park motel, authorities announced.
Terry Redfern, 35, of Paterson, was arrested on Tuesday, March 4, following a months-long investigation into the May 3, 2023, overdose death, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Kearny Man Charged In OD Death Of Newark Fire Captain
A 42-year-old man has been charged in the overdose death of a beloved 49-year-old Newark fire captain who was found unresponsive at a fire station in January.
Eliasel Baez, 42, of Kearny, was charged with strict liability in the death of Newark Fire Captain Carlos Rivera, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, said.
He was also charged with distributing cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, authorities said.
On Jan. 15, Rivera, of Sayreville, was found unresponsive inside the Newark firehouse of Engine 15 Ladder 7 at 269 Park Avenue.
