Two men – one who was convicted at trial and another who pleaded guilty – were sentenced to New Jersey State Prison for their roles in the beating death of a man outside a bar, authorities said.
Laquan McCall, 31, who was convicted of manslaughter in November 2022, was sentenced to 16 years in state prison, according to Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel.

Convicted Killer Flees Lyndhurst Shoplifting-Turned-Robbery, Nabbed By Alert Officer
A habitual offender who once served time for aggravated manslaughter was nabbed by a Lyndhurst police officer after he assaulted a security guard who tried to stop him from shoplifting, authorities said.
Johannes Vanwageningen, 37, recently of Bloomingdale, loaded a shopping cart with merchandise, then bypassed the checkout lanes and headed out the door, Detective Lt. Vincent Auteri said.
Loss prevention officers tried to stop him, but Vanwageningen pushed past one of them and ran off, leaving the packed shopping cart behind, the lieutenant said.

Two Bergen County caretakers face manslaughter charges after they allegedly tied up a disabled man, stuffed a sock in his mouth and dumped his body, NJ Advance Media reports.
Michael Kestenbaum, 62, was found dead at about 7:20 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2022, along Ackerman Street near Route 4 West in River Edge, authorities said. Charged on Thursday, Jan. 19, were Tyrone Closs, 32, and Aniesa Samad, 24, Musella said in a press statement.

Charges were upgraded for a Hudson County man after the man he beat unconscious died, authorities said.
Robert Stevens, 40, of Union City, beat 51-year-old Anthony Passero on Bergen Avenue between Myrtle and Bostwick avenues in Jersey City around 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
