HEROES: PARAMUS P.O.s MORGAN & HAYO
Brock told My9NEWS’s Brenda Flanagan, in an exclusive report, that Morgan is “doing fantastic.”
Whether she’ll have a job to return to is an open question, however.
Morgan was one of a baker’s dozen of Paramus police officers who received layoff notices last summer. When Flanagan asked about their future, Brock replied: “Right now they’re all gainfully employed, and we certainly hope they remain gainfully employed.”
Morgan tried pulling over Michael Sean Carmody for speeding on Route 17 south around 11 p.m., a short time after the Super Bowl had ended. But he took off and then spun out on the ramp leading to the Garden State Parkway south.
Authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT Carmody began firing at Morgan, hitting her twice in the abdomen.
Officer Ryan Hayo, one of several police officers who quickly converged on the scene, exchanged gunfire with Carmody, who was hit several times. Law enforcement officials with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that Carmody then turned the gun on himself.
Exclusive My9 video:
On Wednesday, Carmody’s family agreed to have him removed from life support and he was pronounced dead within minutes at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
Meanwhile, the mood was extremely upbeat at Hackensack University Medical Center, where Morgan continues to steadily improve from gunshots to the abdomen and leg. Initial concern that she might develop an infection or other complications from surgery have pretty much been put to rest.
That sound you heard was a community — of police officers, family, friends and fellow citizens — exhaling.
