Teen found in Hillsdale roadway rushed to hospital

THE REAL STORY: Hillsdale police know that a 15-year-old Pascack Valley High School tenth-grader was struck by the undercarriage of a car and not run over while in the roadway Tuesday night, but they are not sure how he got there. “He could have fallen, he could have dropped his cellphone and went to pick it up. He could have had a medical seizure,” Sgt. Dan McLaughlin told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

“His injuries are not consistent with being run over. They are consistent with him being struck by [the undercarriage] of a car,” McLaughlin said.

“We believe only one car was involved and we are now trying to determine what happened.”

The incident happened a little after 7 p.m. Tuesday on Hillsdale Avenue near Highland Avenue. A female driver who was with her daughter summoned police and said she spotted the teen in the roadway.

Police found the unidentified youth face-down and bleeding. In a valiant effort, a squadron of police from several towns cleared a path to Hackensack University Hospital, closing streets. The youngster arrived at the hospital around 7:45 p.m.

The last authorities knew, he was in critical condition.

Investigators are now hoping someone was either with the teen or saw him that night.

They described the youth as Indian, about 5-foot-7 and 125 pounds, with black hair. At the time, he was wearing a

multi-colored pullover, black sweatpants and sneakers, they said.

Anyone who may have seen him or has information about the incident is asked to call Hillsdale Police immediately at (201) 664-4200, extension 1531.
