The victim reportedly was in the crosswalk when he was struck by a 2013 Buick Lacrosse at the intersection of North Irving Street.

Several members of the Ridgewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, along with a paramedic team from The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, attended to the victim before placing him on a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance, which took him  to Hackensack University Medical Center.

East Ridgewood Avenue between Southern Parkway and Hope Street was closed as police conducted an investigation, with lighting help from Ridgewood Emergency Services.

Concern has grown in the village over crashes involving pedestrians — with responsibility sometimes falling on them and other times on drivers.

Police Chief John Ward has become proactive, employing police pedestrian decoys — often using himself — to catch motorists who don’t yield, as well as jaywalkers.

In Fort Lee, Police Chief Keith Bendul has established frequent stakeouts as part of a “Be Seen, Be Safe” campaign that in just one week produced 100 summonses to drivers who didn’t yield, as well as to several jaywalkers.
