McFadden entered the CVS Store at 410 Broad Avenue around 4:35 this afternoon and “while showing [a] knife, robbed the store of cash and other miscellaneous items,” Molinelli said tonight.
“McFadden left the store and traveled on foot northerly along Broad Avenue and then down Hillside Avenue,” the prosecutor added. “Four (4) police officers, ONE (1) from Leonia and three (3) Palisades Park PD, engaged McFadden, who was still in possession of the knife.”
“At or about the intersection of Hillside and [Kingsley], approximately two blocks from the CVS Store, three (3) of the four officers opened fire on McFadden, striking him multiple time,” Molinelli said. “The fourth officer did not discharge his weapon.
McFadden, who lived with his parents at 473 Grand Avenue in Leonia, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead some time later.
An autopsy will be conducted sometime this week, although toxicology reports are not expected until weeks from now.

McFadden’s sister said family members are withholding comment for now.
“We’re still trying to piece together what happened,” she told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.
Recovered at the scene was the knife believed to have been used in the robbery, a mace can believed to have been used by one of the officers, and the items taken from the CVS Store, as well as numerous other items which cannot be disclosed at this time,” the prosecutor said.
No officers were harmed during the encounter, although all three went to Englewood [Hospital and Medical Center] for observation, he said.
“[I]t is believed that all have been released at this time,” Molinelli said just after 10:30 p.m.
The identities of the officers involved “will be given by the Chiefs of the Leonia and Palisades Park Police,” the prosecutor said. “All three have retained an attorney and have not been questioned at this time. It is expected that they will be questioned shortly.”
Molinelli added: “There were many witnesses to the robbery and subsequent events. Therefore, no further details can be provided by this office at this time. The matter will continue to be investigated by the Bergen County Prosecutors Office Police Shooting Response Team, under the Major Crimes Unit.”
