The pregnant 29-year-old woman from the Bronx remained under observation at Hackensack University Medical Center as a precaution, said Capt. Francesco Aquila, the department's officer in charge.

The other woman, 48, from Jersey City was released from HUMC with a fractured arm, he said.

The driver apparently stopped for a red light on southbound Prospect Avenue near the hospital, then made a left turn onto Essex Street, where the women were crossing, when his Toyota Prius hit them around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aquila told Daily Voice.
