More floods likely if River Edge boat launch stays blocked

SPECIAL REPORT: A “natural” dam caused in large part by Hurricane Sandy has blocked the River Edge boat launch, which will only make area flooding worse if nothing is done about it.

“The flood devastated the Hackensack River south of the Oradell Dam,” said Brett Dzadik, who took the photos here on the New Milford side behind the Dorchester Apartments. “The river is now totally blocked.”

The Hackensack Riverkeeper did a cleanup last week at Kenneth B. George Park in River Edge, in conjunction with the River Edge Environmental Commission. Its next scheduled area cleanup isn’t until Sept. 14 at the Oradell Reservoir.

However, the riverkeeping focuses on trash and debris but not the type of blockage north of the launch.

“Maybe the mayors of Oradell, New Milford and River Edge will get the county or the Army Corps of Engineers to step in and prevent more potential flooding in our area,” Dzadik said.
