Maywood's Newest Police Officer Injured In Crash

MAYWOOD, N.J. -- Maywood's newest police officer was being examined for head and knee injuries in the emergency room at Hackensack University Medical Center after being involved in a crash Wednesday morning.

Officer Benjamin Singer was headed east on East Spring Valley Avenue when a driver ran a stop sign from Coles Avenue, Police Chief David Pegg told Daily Voice.

Singer, who was sworn to the force on March 29, "attempted to swerve out of the way," said Pegg, who was at the hospital. "However, they made contact, forcing the patrol vehicle onto a front lawn nearby.

"The other vehicle went up onto a nearby lawn, slightly striking a garage," he added.

The other driver refused medical treatment, the chief said.
