Officer Eric Aronson stopped George Giumarra Jr. for traffic violations on West Central Avenue and spotted crack cocaine in the car, Police Chief David Pegg told Daily Voice.

When Aronson and backups tried to retrieve it, Giumarra "put the substance in his mouth and swallowed it," he said.

An officer was injured as they got a struggling Giumarra into custody, the chief said.

Because they didn't know how much drugs he'd swallowed, police summoned a Maywood EMS unit that took Giumarra to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Giumarra -- who has a history of arrests for drugs and failing to pay support -- was charged with failing to surrender drugs to police and evidence tampering. He also received three traffic summonses, the chief said.

Officer Peter Donatello arrested Giumarra on Feb. 25 on charges of having Oxycodone with the intent to sell it, as well as possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. He received two traffic summonses, as well, and was released.
