Man who left ‘odd items’ in Bergen courthouse bathroom stole them from Teaneck school, authorities charge

CVP EXCLUSIVE: A collection of “odd items” that forced the evacuation of the Bergen County Courthouse last week after they were found in a bathroom included a coach’s whistle and stopwatch, among other harmless materials, that a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT were stolen from a Teaneck school by a man arrested yesterday.

Hackensack police took 27-year-old Ronnell Freeman into custody after Bergen County Sheriff’s detectives identified him from courthouse surveillance video from last Thursday.

That day, police cleared the building after finding the collection, which included a prayer card, in the bathroom.

“Nothing illegal, nothing you could hurt people with,” one source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “They were organized into a little shrine.”

Sheriff’s investigators interviewed Freeman before turning him over to Teaneck authorities, who charged him with burglarizing the Community School, as well as with possession of stolen property.

The 5-foot-10-inch, 180-pound Freeman, who was released on bail from a Manhattan jail on a burglary charge early last month, remained held on $10,000 bail today in the Bergen County Jail.
