However, Ricky McMillian of Paterson (top, right) received a reprimand from Superior Court Judge Edward Jerejian, who sentenced him to three years probation for third-degree aggravated assault.
“You dragged her, breaking her ankle – for what?” the judge asked. “Because you’re a man? You could have killed her.”
McMillian and his then-girlfriend were in a movie theatre in Paramus on Dec. 5, 2011 when they began arguing.
An angry McMillian left the theater with her car keys, got into the vehicle and started it.
The Middlesex County woman, now 24, jumped on the hood to try to prevent him from taking the car, but he kept driving and she fell off.
Citing a long history of domestic violence incidents that began at a young age, Jerejian told McMillian: “You obviously have some sort of problem with your relationships. You have been in and out of domestic violence court.
“Attitude or temper doesn’t lend itself well to relationships.”
Jerejian, sitting in Hackensack, cited a strong need to deter such conduct, which he said he hoped three years of probation would do to McMillian.
