UPDATE (11 a.m. TUES., Aug. 30: Electricity has been restored throughout most of New Milford. Oradell Avenue and New Milford Avenue, along with River Edge Avenue and New Bridge Road, are open — as are Holland, Lenox, and Washington avenues and River Road, Police Chief Frank Papapietro reports. Columbia and Harvard streets are open but with minor flooding, he said.
New Bridge Road remained the only river crossing into early evening Monday out of New Milford, where much of the borough remained without power.
As expected, River Edge Road is still closed, as is Columbia Street, New Milford Avenue and Oradell Avenue.
New Milford police and fire department boats, as well as craft from the Oradell, River Edge and Leonia fire departments were out much of Sunday in flood-prone areas, as the water began rising.
UPDATE: Bergen County sustained $20 million in flood damage that will be covered by federal disaster funds, county officials said today. “We’re ahead of this. The worst is over,” County Emergency Management Coordinator Dwane Razzetti reassured a countywide conference call of local officials anxious about more Passaic River flooding. Although a final count isn’t available, the rescuers helped more than 200 people get out during a six-hour operation.
Among them were pets, the sick and the elderly, Papapietro said.
The rescuers had a lot of water to cover: Columbia, Harvard and Pine streets were flooded, as were Holland and Lenox avenues, in addition to the north section of River Road.
Henley Avenue, west of River Road, was also heavily flooded, affecting businesses and a PSE&G substation that remains closed today.
“Most residents found their own shelter and some utilized the Bergen Community College shelter set up by Bergen County OEM and the RED Cross,” Papapietro said. “There were no reported injuries during the rescue and, thankfully, no fatalities.”
Borough building inspectors will be deployed starting tomorrow to determine the livability of the homes effected. FEMA will be deploying advance teams to the area within a few days.

CLIFFVIEW PILOT HAS IT FIRST: Arson investigators were at the Valero gas station on Broadway in Hillsdale, where two local firefighters suffered minor injuries extinguishing a pre-dawn blaze while being pounded with rain and wind.
