Detective John Dalton and Officer Ed Meneses ran the plate number of the car around 7:30 Tuesday night, Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

When it came back registered to a different vehicle, they stopped the car at Essex and Fair streets.

As Dalton walked toward the card, Salcedo said, “he noticed the driver trying to hide something between the seat and the console.”

The officer then spotted the butt end of a handgun, the captain said.

He ordered out the 17-year-old driver, who was taken into custody on a juvenile complaint for carrying an illegal weapon.

The Hackensack teen is being held in the Union County Juvenile Detention center pending a hearing in the Family Part of Superior Court in Hackensack.
