Helen Scoff was in the crosswalk at Central Avenue and Second Street when she was struck just after 6 p.m. by an eastbound silver 2006 Dodge wagon driven by Romaine Hodge, 35, of Maywood, Capt. Nicole Foley said.
She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with severe, life-threatening injuries, Foley said.
Scoff, who lives in a nearby Overlook Avenue high-rise, wasn't carrying identification, the captain said. However, she did have a card for a local pharmacy that detectives used to trace to her building.
A doorman there then identified Scoff from a photo and provided next-of-kin information, Foley said.
Police were still investigating the crash, and summonses were likely, the captain said.
