City police got a call of suspicious card activity last night at the Target store off Main Street and Hackensack Avenue, Detective Capt. Thomas Salcedo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. The two suspects had already left, but a security officer got a partial license plate, he said.

Playing a hunch, Detective Sgt. Michael Antista and Detective Ryan Weber went straight to the Target at the Bergen Town Center in Paramus, the captain said.

Sitting in the car they were looking for outside the store was Basil Norwin Chambers, 24. Coming out of the Target — with stolen proceeds — was 27-year-old James Edward Jenkins, Salcedo said.

Chambers and Jenkins, both from Brooklyn, had 37 credit cards between them, he said.

“They were using stolen credit card numbers to either make purchases or, more often than not, put additional money on Target gift cards,” Salcedo said.

It was too soon to tell how much in money and merchandise was stolen as a result, the captain said, noting that $200 at a time was being put on the gift cards.

An inventory was being taken.

Meanwhile, Jenkins remained held on a combined $30,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

That breaks out to $20,000 for two counts each of theft by deception, fraudulent use of a credit card and forgery in Hackensack and $10,000 for receiving stolen property, wrongful impersonation and fraudulent use of a credit card in Paramus.

Chambers was being held on $25,000 combined bail — $15,000 out of Hackensack for wrongful impersonation and two counts of theft by deception, and $10,000 from Paramus for wrongful impersonation.
