YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 65-year-old man struck by a car in Fort Lee died last night at Hackensack University Medical Center — the third pedestrian struck in the township over the past week and the first fatality, despite repeated urgings by police that people pay more attention walking AND driving.

Gerard A. DeAngelis of Main Street was crossing Anderson Avenue between Jane Street and Catherine Street, near the Madonna Church, around 5:15 last night when a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by 58-year-old Maria Ventura-Granados struck him, Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul said this afternoon.

Ventura-Granados, of Anderson Avenue, received a summons for careless driving. Whether those charges would be upgraded hadn’t yet been determined. An investigation was continuing, the chief said.

“There is no indication of excessive speed or alcohol involvement,” he said.

DeAngelis was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:52 last night, Bendul said.

Ventura-Granados, who was shaken up in the incident, was taken to Englewood Medical Center and was participating in the investigation, the chief said.
