“Aside from a lack of physical evidence indicating otherwise, detectives learned through the investigation that the victim had been depressed due to the long illness and subsequent death of her mother along with other issues,” the chief said.
Police Monday night issued an alert for the emotionally troubled 37-year-old woman after she was reported missing by her family.
Her car was later discovered at the Shop-Rite. A K-9 search of the area followed — including in the nearby woods and along the riverbank.
A family member searching through the riverbank off Columbia Street found the body around 8:30 yesterday morning, Papapietro said.
The rapidly moving tide at one point covered the body, which eventually was recovered around 10:30 or so, he said.
Police also recovered the gun, which had been reported stolen out of Dumont by an acquaintance of hers, the chief said.
