Cops who stormed building didn’t know where gunman was

Angry Jersey City officials said second guessers don’t know what they’re talking about when they criticize the force for storming an apartment instead of waiting out the gunman inside. But they also revealed that the officers who were ordered in didn’t know who was on the other side of the door when they forced it open.

It turned out to be Hassian Hosendove, who immediately opened fire, killing Officer Marc DiNardo. Hosendove was shot and killed, along with his wife.

Clearly upset over the second guessing — citing a specific TV expert who questioned their tactics — the officials released video taken from a security camera showing Hosendove shooting at police before ducking into the apartment building.

“When we were seeking to open up a line of communication,” said Police Chief Tom Comey. “(He) was looking to open up a line of fire.”

Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach said he made the call to go in.

“I don’t like the result but it was the right decision at the time,” Nalbach said.

“Hostage negotiation starts with locating the individual,” added Jersey City Police Inspector Paul Riepe. “We did not have an opportunity to set up a negotiation because he opened fire.”

Nalbach, who wasn’t at the scene, said officials planned to release the video next week but moved earlier in response to the ABC report.

Officers who’d been tailing Hosendove watched him that July 16 morning as Anderson moved a car outside the building from one side of the street to the other.

As an officer approaches, the video shows, Hosendove pulls a shotgun from under his robe and begins firing. Then he ambles back into the building, as Anderson holds the door open for him.

Tactical officers descended on the building. Police officials said they tried to evacuating it but several people refused to leave.

It was an hour after Hosendove had ducked inside when an armored car pulled in front and police began issuing unspecified orders through loudspeakers, the officials said.

Moments later, they said, roughly 20 emergency services officers began going door-to-door to evacuate the remaining residents and find Hosendove.

Knocking on a third-floor apartment door, they got no answer. Hearing music inside, they forced their way in, the officials said.

Antony and a few other officers were immediately shot from a few feet away. They unloaded on Hosendove, killing him. Anderson was reportedly found with a single gunshot wound to the back of her skull.
