Adding to a long and distinguished career, Conte will continue to work three days a week at the Hackensack courthouse – an arrangement made possible when he came out of retirement in 2008, offering his services to help the county’s family court. Rabner renewed the two-year term in 2010 and again last December.
Conte, 76, was appointed to the Bergen bench in 1991. He started in the Family Division before becoming a criminal court judge.
He retired in 1996 to practice law with his son, John A. Conte Jr., a partner with Rubenstein, Meyerson, Fox, Mancinelli & Conte, P.A. of Montvale, and has remained a special cousel to the firm as a mediator on civic and economic issues.
Known for being tough but fair, the elder Conte is a former member of the State Supreme Court Ethics Committee and served as a member of the Supreme Court Committee on Municipal Courts Procedure.
He had the experience, having served as a Municipal Court Judge in Saddle Brook, Elmwood Park, Wallington, Rochelle Park and Fort Lee.
