Sheriff Officer Krzysztof Wojtylo stopped the gold Buick after Daniel Mactaggart took the turn from Lanza Avenue onto eastbound Madeline Avenue headed west, Dave Martinez told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Mactaggart “began to act very nervous,” Wojtylo reported. “[H]is carotid artery was pulsating, his breathing was rapid and shallow. He kept on moving around, shifting his weight from leg to leg. His face turned pale and he was avoiding eye contact.”
The officer said he asked Mactaggart why he was nervous but didn’t get a response.
Noticing he had dilated pupils, Wojtylo asked Mactaggart whether he’d taken any drugs, including heroin.
“He hesitated, and said ‘No’,” the officer said.
Wojtylo called for backup, as Mactaggart “sat down on the rear bumper of his vehicle and placed his hands on his forehead.”
Asked whether he had drugs with him, he said, “Yes. I have two bricks in the trunk,” the officer reported.
After obtaining Mactaggart’s consent signature for a consent, Wojtylo said, he found the drugs. The officer also seized $844 cash suspected to be drug proceeds and had the car impounded.
Mactaggart was being held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail. He also received summonses for failing to yield and driving against traffic.
A passenger later identified as Jonathan Cruz was released after both he and Mactaggart said he had no idea the heroin was in the car.
