A woman came running out of the 2-story home just as DPW workers were passing by, South Hackensack Fire Capt. Jim Riley said.

“The DPW started hitting it with a couple of small extinguishers and they had it knocked down decently," Riley said. "But by the time the fire department arrived, it had rekindled.”

Riley suspects an air conditioning board in a bedroom ignited the blaze. Inspectors were investigating.

Four occupants — a woman and her mother on the first floor, and her daughter and her boyfriend on the second — could be displaced, the captain said.

Little Ferry and Hackensack firefighters joined their South Hackensack colleagues. Moonachie First Aid & Rescue Squad transported the injured firefighters.
