The Hong Kong-bound flight made an emergency landing at Newfoundland's Goose Bay Airport at 9:31 p.m., six hours after taking off from New Jersey Saturday, several media outlets reported.
Just as the plane was preparing to depart, a door of the Boeing 777-200 got stuck open.
Because Goose Bay is a Royal Canadian Air Force base and there were no customs officer on duty to process travelers, the passengers were trapped inside the aircraft.
They spent 14 long and painful hours huddled and waiting in subzero temps.
Many passengers including professional wrestler Sonjay Dutt desperately tweeted out for help.
Passenger Steven Lau tweeted a photo of airport workers attempting to fix the door on the Canadian tarmac.
After more than 12 hours on the plane, airport workers brought travelers coffee and doughnuts from Tim Horton's. A rescue plane from Newark brought the passengers back to New Jersey.
