New Jersey Drivers Allowed '8Theist,' Related Plates After Lawsuit

While "8THEIST" is happily taken, New Jersey drivers will soon be able to request vanity plates referencing their beliefs in atheism, feminism and more.

The legislative change came after the Motor Vehicle Commission this month settled a related lawsuit filed almost three years ago.

Shannon Morgan of Leesburg had filed a lawsuit against the commission in 2013 after her plate — "8THEIST" — was rejected.

Instead, she applied for a plate that said "BAPTIST," which was quickly approved, according to The New York Times.

An advocacy group in Washington that acted as Morgan's legal counsel sued the commission in April 2014.

The lawsuit, settled Aug. 4, requested relief based on the commission's denial of Morgan's request.

It also sought enforcement of a New Jersey Administrative code that excludes the issuance of personalized license plates that "may carry connotations offensive to good taste and decency."

Morgan will receive the plate she requested in 2013 after she reapplies, according to settlement papers.

The commission will also be issuing license plate applications related to the following:

HUMANST
ATHEISM
GODLESS
HEATHEN
and more
