MAYWOOD, N.J. — If all had gone according to plan, Twin Door Tavern bartender Lyndon "Woody" Woodward would be in Colorado, not Maywood.

He was at the West Pleasant Street bar the day before he planned on road-tripping west when owner David Rivera told him he needed a bartender to get him through the holidays.

Woodward took the position, mostly to help Rivera.

But when January rolled around, the position opened up full time. Woodward stayed.

"And the rest is history," said Woodward, 66, of Hawthorne.

What he likes most about the job is that every day is new, he said. He meets a lot of people and the cash is nice, but there's a part of Woodward that wishes things had gone differently.

"In this business, it's all cash," the bartender said. "There's no 401K.

"So kids should stay in school and get that college degree."
