Retired veteran of the Jersey City police force and past president of the Jersey City Police Officers Union, Harry Sandwith, and his son Joseph — an active-duty Jersey City cop — invited three East Coast bike detailers to help revitalize the bikes for use in upcoming parades and for exhibition.
All three bikes are standard police issue with law enforcement lettering, flashing lights, sirens and equipment.
They will be used in the upcoming 125th Anniversary Celebration July 1 and Memorial Day Parade in Ridgefeild.
“Motorcycle detailing is an excellent new revenue stream for automotive detailers, and the biking community understands that a clean, shiny bike means better performance on the road,” said Harry Sandwith, a lifelong biker who survived a serious motorcycle accident that led to his policing retirement.
“We are training detailers so they can branch out into a style of motorcycle detailing that goes beyond a wash and rinse. Some of them are even opening Hogfather shops of their own.”
The MCI, known affectionately as Otis, was the department’s first motorcycle, built for and donated to the Ridgefield police by Jersey’s own late Frank Sassani, owner and operator of Wide World of Wheels Custom Motorcycle Fabricating of Little Ferry, according to Deputy Chief of Police Robert Meurer of the Ridgefield Police Department.
Other participants include Zachary Cook of Pro Image Detailing in North Carolina, Scott Macha of Total Eclipse Detailing in Maine and Jake Benko of Hot Rods Detailing in Pennsylvania.
The Hogfather team used a non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaner called Quick-Glo rust remover and metal polish with a microfiber towel to work the chrome, brass, and other metals and glass, into a glorious shine. He also uses his private label Hog Gloss to finish.
“When they finished with these bikes, they look absolutely amazing,” Chief Meurer. said
“Honestly, even the MCI, which is over 40 years old, looks like it just rolled off the assembly line yesterday. They did a phenomenal job!”
