Steve Gambutti, who owns the originals on E. Ridgewood Avenue, is in his fifth year of sobriety. Here are his tips:
1. Take care of you own needs first. You can't help anyone if you can't help yourself. Consider locating your local "AlAnon" meeting to be more educated about their disease.
2. Don't try to protect your loved one from the consequences of their addiction. Without consequences there can be no change.
3. Don't give money to loved ones suffering from addiction. If they can afford drugs, they can afford to pay their bills and eat. Back to the suffering consequences.
4. Remember that there is no human power that can relieve a person of their addiction. This includes you.
5. Always remember to let your loved ones know you love them even if you don't condone their action.
