Groundhog Day Without Milltown Mel Is Like A Day Without Sunshine
A bureaucratic snag has left Milltown Mel in the hole this year, according to Groundhog Day organizers. You may recall that Central Jersey went without its celebrity groundhog last Feb. 2 due to Milltown Mel's untimely death. Organizers then looked far and wide for replacement cousins for this year. "After months of trying to solve our dilemma, your Milltown Mel wranglers are sorry to report that we are unable to have a groundhog available for this year's festivities," organizers wrote on Facebook. "The new groundhog we originally scheduled to have made his debut is currently not allowed …

Meteorologists (Not Groundhog) Share Spring Forecast For Mid-Atlantic Region
Winter is sticking around, no matter what Punxsutawney Phil prognosticates on Feb. 2, AccuWeather meteorologists say. The middle of January is the halfway point in meteorological winter. Virginia on down the coast is a different story, and is expected to feel "more like spring," AccuWeather’s Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok says. But his team adds that many "Americans ma…

NJ's Celebrated Groundhog 'Milltown Mel' Dies Just Before His Big Day
It's an overcast day in Central Jersey, where Groundhog Day enthusiasts are mourning the loss of their beloved groundhog, Milltown Mel. Mel died just before the most celebrated day of his year, according to his Facebook page. “We Wranglers are sad to report that Milltown Mel recently crossed over the rainbow bridge,” the Garden State groundhog’s Facebook page announced on Sunday. The announcement did not say exactly when Mel died. The Middlesex County borough’s annual Groundhog Day ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday morning, was canceled. “Considering the average lifespan of a Groundhog i…

PETA Pushes To Retire Punxsutawney Phil
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals penned an open letter to the President of The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club urging him to retire one of the world's most famous rodents earlier this week. But the club was ready to respond to the claims. In PETA's letter the organization claimed "As you know, Phil is certainly not a real meteorologist and didn’t volunteer for this job. For far too long, he’s been dragged out of a fake tree stump and subjected to noise, flashing lights, and crowds, against all of his natural instincts.” President Jeff Lundy emphasized how well taken care of Ph…
