A Paterson man and an accomplice filed nearly $1.2 million in bogus COVID-related unemployment claims over the course of three months, federal authorities in Massachusetts charged. Omar Thompson, 39, and his unidentified female partner submitted more than 100 fraudulent Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claims, sometimes recruiting people from other states in the scheme and pocketing kickbacks, they said. Despite weeks-long delays in distributing more than $2.7 billion in unemployment benefits, New Jersey expects to process another 139,000 in jobless claims during the next week, state officials said (story continues below poll). NJ Jobless Claims Surpass 1 Million
More than a million people have filed unemployment claims in New Jersey during the COVID-19 pandemic, state officials said. "This is an unemployment crisis unlike that which we have ever seen," Gov. Phil Murphy said during a news briefing on Thursday. Weekly jobless claims are, literally, many times more than the state Labor Department has historically dealt with across entire months, Murphy said.
