GARFIELD, N.J. -- The Garfield Prevention Coalition continues seeking volunteers dedicated to working together to fight addiction.

The organization’s next meeting is Thursday, Dec. 10.

The coalition grew out of Garfield EPIC (Empower Peers & Inspire Change), a youth coalition that originally focused on underage drinking. Over time, needs determined that other addictions needed to be addressed: marijuana, tobacco, alcohol.

Members decided a stronger community effort WAS NEEDED, though.

Working with the Bergen County Prevention Coalition, Garfield EPIC Youth Coalition became the Garfield Prevention Coalition and now actively engages adults as well youth and has expanded its mission to include major addictions.

The organization’s goals:

  • Reduce youth substance abuse
  • Change perceptions regarding use of marijuana, tobacco, and underage drinking
  • Provide youth with skills to become tomorrow’s leaders
  • Support the community in becoming culturally aware and deeply bonded
  • Work collaboratively in becoming a healthier community.

To date, the coalition has made two significant accomplishments: it has received federal funds for prevention efforts the last two years and has built strong working relationships with community partners.

These include local government, the YMCA, the Health Department and Garfield schools, in an ongoing effort. The coalition is supported by Children’s Aid and Family Services.

Meetings are the second Thursday of every month, 10 a.m. - noon and 6 - 8 p.m. in the Garfield YMCA, 70 Outwater Lane.
