A Newark career criminal who once shot and killed a Paterson man must spend the next 10 years in federal prison for dealing heroin.
Shawn Alexander, 52, has spent all but three of the past 27 years in custody, including three stints in state prison, records show.
His most serious conviction followed the cold-blooded killing of a Paterson man in 1994.
Alexander and a companion had been carjacked by Barry “Bistro” Chapman when they went looking for revenge, authorities said at the time.

A South Jersey man died on Sunday of head injuries he sustained in a fight in January, authorities said.
James Bates, 47, of Chesilhurst had been punched in the jaw, according to Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer and Chesilhurst Police Chief Wendell Smith.
Bates' attacker, Alexander Toussaint, 29, of Chesilhurst, has been newly charged with first-degree manslaughter and third-degree aggravated assault, Mayer and Smith said.

A Toms River woman was arrested after stabbing her ex-boyfriend to death early Saturday, Oct. 24, authorities said.
Samantha Massimino, 33, of Toms River, was charged with aggravated manslaughter and several weapons offenses in the death of Reinaldo Feliciano, Jr., 35, also of Toms River, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Toms River Township Police Chief Mitch Little said.

Authorities charged a Hackensack woman with killing her newborn son.
Kimberly Aponte, 19, hid the unwanted pregnancy from her family, authorities said.
Aponte gave birth before dawn Saturday to a full-term boy whom she then wrapped in a towel and stuffed into a hamper, they said.
Aponte's father called city police to the family's Hackensack Avenue apartment Saturday afternoon, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
