Retired Police Chief, Polish Immigrant Open New Gym In Old Jersey City Firehouse One is a retired police chief from Bergen County and the other a Polish immigrant who 20 years ago was rollerblading home from work at 3 a.m. because he had no other means of transportation. Both have achieved their shared dream of owning a gym. Marty Kahn, who retired as Fairview's police chief last July, and David Jaros, who moved to Lodi from Poland knowing not a lick of English are opening Firehouse Fitness later this spring, in a historic Jersey City firehouse. The name came easily to the fitness buffs, who met some years ago in the 5 a.m. crew at Hackensack Meridian Fitness and Welln…

'Life Is Precious': Paramus Woman Recovers From Brain Injury With CrossFit Life can change in an instant. It did for Kelly Ann Woods of Paramus in 2012 when she slipped and fell on ice. Only months later was she diagnosed with a concussion and spinal fluid leak.  The accident to Woods is a red line that divides her life in two, but her fierce determination to finish any task at hand -- whether it's recovery or a workout at CrossFit The Rack located inside of Gold's Gym in Paramus -- remained constant. "When you go through a life-altering accident you really gain perspective on what matters most," said Woods, 31, an infrastructure architect for UPS in M…
Englewood Firefighter Builds Smoking Hot Bodies In His New Gym Englewood Firefighter Builds Smoking Hot Bodies In His New Gym
Englewood Firefighter Builds Smoking Hot Bodies In His New Gym Tarrant Anderson of Englewood says fitness and firefighting go hand-in-hand. That's why he's doing both -- 50 yards away from each other. The Englewood firefighter and personal trainer last October opened his own gym The Fit Factory, LLC on S. Van Brunt Street, just down the block from the fire station.  The common thread between Anderson's two jobs is that no matter which one he's working, he gets to do what he loves: Help people. "There's not a day that I hate my life or my job," said Anderson, 30, in his converted warehouse. "I'm truly blessed to be able to help people i…

Lyndhurst CrossFit Coach Who Beat Anorexia: Strong Is The New Sexy LYNDHURST, N.J. — Tara Shoebridge-Ramos of Lyndhurst makes CrossFit look easy. The 28-year-old breezes through burpees and throws hundreds of pounds around like confetti. Ramos can do strict pull-ups from the high bar with a 45-pound plate strapped to her torso and muscle-ups on the rings, an exercise that most athletes have to scale back. And to Ramos, that's pretty crazy, especially considering where she was six years ago: rock bottom of anorexia. "It took over my life," said Ramos, a Wayne native. "I didn't realize how sick I was until I saw how many things I wasn't able…
Fit Cops: Custodian To Corrections, Emerson Officer Lands On His Feet Fit Cops: Custodian To Corrections, Emerson Officer Lands On His Feet
Fit Cops: Custodian To Corrections, Emerson Officer Lands On His Feet EMERSON, N.J. -- Tyler Monroy of Emerson was 22 years old with a bright future ahead of him in 2014. At the time, that wasn't how it felt. His days were dark and dragging. He was balancing a trio of dead-end jobs and spent his days cleaning high school bathrooms, busing food and working security at a mall. Monroy's only glimmer of hope was the possibility that one day, he'd hear back from the New Jersey Corrections Department on his application. Going to the gym and listening to motivational speeches he found online were Monroy's lifelines at the time. But now that he's landed on his fee…

Fit Cops: K9 Officer Gains Mental Fortitude At Paramus CrossFit Gym PARAMUS, N.J. -- Watching Cindy Garcia at Guerrilla Fitness in Paramus, it's hard to believe there was ever a time she wasn't a CrossFit athlete. Handstand push-ups? No problem. Pistol squats? They're her strong suit. The sport came naturally to Garcia. She is unstoppable. But despite her hesitance to try it a year ago, Garcia says CrossFit is one of the best things she's ever done for her career as an NJ Transit K9 officer. "You never know what your day is going to entail -- could be easy patrolling, or something major," said Garcia, 42, after Thursday evening's rigorous workou…
Fit Cops: Paramus Deputy Chief Hooked On Racing For Remedies Fit Cops: Paramus Deputy Chief Hooked On Racing For Remedies
Fit Cops: Paramus Deputy Chief Hooked On Racing For Remedies PARAMUS, N.J. -- Standing at the starting line of his very first obstacle course in 2014, everything seems to be moving in slow motion for Paramus Deputy Chief Robert Guidetti. The starting horn blows. Water comes shooting out of hoses in every which direction. The dirt underneath Guidetti's shoes turns to mud and suddenly, he's sinking. There was only one way out: Run. And he did, for just over three miles -- with those who can for those who cannot. That Muck Run four years ago at the Turtleback Zoo in West Orange honored those fighting or who have succumbed to multiple sclerosis. Four …

Fit Cops: Paramedic From Paramus Dropped 40 Pounds For Dream Police Job PARAMUS, N.J. -- The degree and the dream were both there for Christie Ohlendorf of Paramus.  All that was left to do was lose the weight. Ohlendorf had been working as a paramedic with St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for five years in 2011, but knew that if she wanted to work as a police officer in Wayne, she'd have to make a change. If not for herself, for her son, now 12. "I knew what I wanted and hated the fact that my kid knew what I wanted, and I wasn’t doing it," said Ohlendorf, 34. "I wanted to show him you can do what you want to do, even if there are obstacl…
