The driver, Christopher Velez, 25, and his passenger, 22, were stopped on northbound Route 208 at McBride Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

The pair "initially stated that they had been smoking marijuana inside the vehicle earlier, then voluntarily turned over two bags of packaged marijuana to the officers," Metzler said.

A search of the vehicle turned up 11 additional bags of pot, the cash and five cells phones stashed in a hidden compartment, he said.

Velez also was carrying "a large quantity of cash" in his pocket, the sergeant said.

Both were released pending court hearings on charges of marijuana possession and distribution and money laundering.

Velez was also charged with failure to yield to oncoming traffic, having drugs in a car and having tinted windows, Metzler said.
