Stephen Raible, 52, of Fair Lawn, originally woke the Lyncrest Avenue residents while talking on a cellphone outside the home around 1 a.m. Saturday, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

"They then heard the screen being opened to their bedroom window and an attempt to open the window before [Raible] proceeded to the front door, where he opened the screen door and attempted to open the front door," Metzler said.

The homeowner "climbed out his bedroom window and approached [Raible], pushing him and holding him to the ground until police arrived," the sergeant said.

Police later caught Raible throwing drugs into the toilet of his cell at headquarters, Metzler said.

They charged him with attempted burglary, drug possession and destruction of evidence.

A judge ordered Raible held on $35,000 bail in the custody of Bergen County Sheriff’s officers at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, where he was receiving addiction treatment.
