She was diagnosed with Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, an extremely rare form of lung cancer.
Three months later, Sophie's 9-year-old cousin, Bennett Burgida of Englewood, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Their respective communities have been rallying hard, organizing prayer sessions at local synagogues and launching fundraisers to help buoy the costs of medical finances.
More than 27,700 had been raised as of Friday on a GoFundMe on Bennett's behalf, which will go toward Tackle Kids Cancer at HUMC.
Meanwhile, Sophie's family has been blogging her journey on her website, Love For Sophie.
In May, Underground CrossFit in Tenafly will be holding a Strongman competition for Sophie and Bennett to raise money for Chai Lifeline, the organization helping them through the ordeal.
