GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Barbers Christine Modica of Hawthorne and Rachel Israel of Mahwah knew it was time for a change when they found themselves taking turns cutting different sides of a client’s head at their Franklin Lakes barbershop.
With sore shoulders from the non-adjustable salon chairs in their 500-square-foot salon, Modica and Israel set out to find a new place.
As fate would have it, Salon Salon Rocks on Rock Road in Glen Rock had an opening. The barbers will have an official grand opening at 4 p.m. April 1 — rain or shine.
"We had every intention of opening a barbershop," Modica said. "We saw this place needed a new boss and we needed a new home."
Together, Israel and Modica launched "Stag House" for the guys and its counterpart, "Doe.Tique," for the gals.
The barbers began renovations on Nov. 1 and started cutting hair six days later.
Modica and Israel sought décor from consignment shops and friends to help with the creative design. Their vision: Snow White and the Huntsmen.
Doe.Tique’s section of the shop has turquoise walls with gold accents and chandeliers, while the Stag house looks more like a bar.
That’s because it is.
Modica and Israel offer all customers alcoholic beverages from their cabinet.
“It definitely helps,” said customer Jordan Galbraith from a salon chair in between sips of whiskey. "I left my New York City barbershop to come here."
The barbers are hoping their shop will take on an identity of its own.
“We hope to have our own personality,” Modica said.
