Man Killed In West New York Apartment Fire: Prosecutors
A 55-year-old man was killed in an apartment fire in West New York on Sunday, August 20, authorities said. At 5 a.m. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue was notified of a fire at an apartment above 6213 Bergenline Avenue, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Upon arrival, first responders found heavy smoke coming from a bedroom within the apartment, Suarez said. A man who mowed down a pedestrian, assaulted others then barricaded himself in a Hudson County home was in custody after a seven-hour standoff Sunday, July 2, authorities said. The strange scene began shortly before 9 a.m., when 45-year-old Malik Moore, of Orange, struck a pedestrian near the intersection of 70th Street and Bergenline Avenue, police in Guttenberg said. West New York Police Captain Stole $60K From Youth Academy: Prosecutor
A 49-year-old West New York police captain was charged with stealing from the West New York Youth Police Academy, which he helped raise money for, authorities said. Erwin Moreno was arrested on Thursday, June 15 after an investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Internal Affairs Unit, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Between 2016 and 2023, Moreno stole $60,000 from the organization's funds for his own benefit, Suarez said. A Hudson County cyclist was seriously hurt after being struck by a car that left the scene Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. A 33-year-old North Bergen woman was riding an electric bicycle near 50th Street and Bergenline Avenue in West New York and was struck by a vehicle that sped off shortly before 12:25 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a Friday release.
