Newark's Curfew For Kids Postponed: Mayor
The City of Newark has announced it is postponing its Juvenile Safety Ordinance, which was scheduled to go into effect on Friday, April 12. Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé said a press conference will be scheduled and announced next week to include plans for the city’s Summer Safety Initiative. Under the plan, unaccompanied minors, ages 17 and below, who are more than 100 yards from their residence between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. the following day will be given a verbal warning and will be escorted to his or her residence and released to the care of his or her …

As the weather gets warmer, New Jersey's largest city is taking action to keep kids safe. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Fritz Fragé announced the city is launching an overnight for kids ages 17 and below, calling it a "Juvenile Safety Initiative." Two Newark Teens Shot Near High School: Authorities
Two Newark teenagers were shot near West Side High School on Tuesday, March 26, authorities said. A 17-year-old and a 15-year-old boy were the victims of the shooting, Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. The two teenagers were transported to University Hospital in Newark, authorities said. Gov. Phil Murphy said his office was coordinating with law enforcement. Rafael Padilla, a longtime Newark firefighter, died on Tuesday, Dec. 5. A lifelong Newark resident, Padilla served as a sergeant in the US Army National Guard for 25 years and joined the Newark Fire Department in April 2007, being stationed at Truck 8 and Engine 27, according to his obituary. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and other offenses for stabbing another boy to death in Newark Tuesday morning, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
