The Newark Fire Division called code enforcement to the first floor of the house on the 800 block of 19th Street, for the presence of children and insects around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, a city spokeswoman said. Fire Breaks Out At Newark Funeral Home Firefighters put out a blaze at a Newark funeral home Wednesday. Sixty members of the Newark Fire Division responded to the Churchman Funeral Home on 13th Avenue around 12:45 p.m., Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. The fire started on the building’s second floor and extended to its third floor, according to Amrbose, and was under control by 1:10 p.m. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a there-story wood-frame home on 16th Street in the early-morning hours.  Approximately 90 firefighters responded as the blaze spread to two adjacent, vacant buildings at 509 and 513 South 16th St. One firefighter was taken to University Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury. 2 Injured, 4 Families Displaced In Newark Fire Four Newark families were displaced in a house fire early Sunday morning, officials said. A two-story Vermont Avenue building went up in flames around 6 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. A female firefighter was treated after she fell and hurt her back, and a building resident was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Ambrose said. The blaze was under control by 6:40 a.m. and is being investigated by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit. The American Red Cross is working with the four displaced families. Firefighters Lead Six To Safety, 26 Displaced In Newark Blaze A fire that quickly went to two alarms burned through a multifamily home in Newark Saturday night, officials said.  The blaze started around 9:50 p.m. at 168 Sherman Ave. Most of the residents managed to escape the three-story building on their own, but firefighters found six people in the basement and led them to safety.  The Red Cross said it was assisting 24 people from seven families. A total of 26 people and eight families were affected by the fire, Newark officials said.  The cause is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division's Investigation Unit.
