Firefighters responded to Norman Towers at 500 North Walnut St., at approximately 4:30 a.m., Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, said.
Approximately an hour later, Charles Rodgers -- who had been living alone in the unit where the kitchen fire broke out -- was pronounced dead, Stephens said.
The incident remains under investigation.
