TENAFLY, N.J. – Tenafly police nabbed a 20-year-old borough man and 16-year-old accomplice who they said went on a destructive rampage – torching a car on one block and bushes on another while slashing tires and breaking vehicle windows.
Detectives were trying to determine whether Jeanluc Dulot and the Tenafly teen were also responsible for slashing on tires on another car and damaging several downtown commercial signs last week, Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
Officers responding to a car fire in a North Browning Avenue driveway just after 5 a.m. last Wednesday found a 2013 Honda Civic engulfed, deMoncda said.
“Due to the proximity of the car parked next to the house, Tenafly officers quickly evacuated the home,” he said. “Fortunately, the Tenafly Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene shortly thereafter and extinguished the car fire before it had a chance to spread.”
Fire officials immediately deemed the blaze suspicious and notified detectives, the captain said.
While they were investigating the incident, two more were reported, deMoncada said: In one, a resident’s car tires were slashed and two side windows broken. In another, a resident’s car tires were slashed and a small fire was set to some bushes on the same property.
“The fire had already extinguished itself upon arrival of officers, but they reported smelling gasoline at the scene of this second suspicious fire, he said.
Detectives quickly identified and took both suspects into custody, the captain said.
Dulot was charged with two counts each of arson, criminal mischief and criminal trespass and released under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law pending a detention hearing.
The juvenile was released to a parent on a delinquency complaint charging the same offenses.
