The city employee was driving past the house at 255 Liberty Road just before 2:30 p.m. when he saw smoke and rushed inside to see whether anyone was home, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
That when the two juveniles “came running out and fled the area,” he said.
The two-alarm blaze was ignited on the first floor, which was pretty much destroyed even though firefighters had it entirely extinguished in minutes.
The house had been vacant for three years, the source said.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit was investigating.
